Radwanska Rolls Past Peer to Advance to the Semi-Finals
8/7/2010
Carlsbad, Calif.- It was a cool evening at the La Costa Resort and Spa, but fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was on fire on Friday night as she easily moved into the semifinals of the Mercury Insurance Open Presented by Tri-City Medical Center with an impressive 6-2, 6-0, win over Israel’s Shahar Peer.
Coming into the quarterfinal match, Peer led Radwanska 3-1 in career head-to-head meetings, but that mattered little as Radwanska scored an early break and built a 3-1 first set lead.
Peer managed to hold serve in the next game, but that would be the last game she would win as Radwanska took control and dominated the rest of the evening.
At 4-2 in the first set Peer fought to hold serve, but after a 14-point game, her serve was broken as Radwanska increased her lead to 5-2.
Serving for the first set, Radwanska fell behind 15-40, but rallied to win four straight points and put the first set away in 35 minutes.
Radwanska continued to pick up her game and broke Peer’s serve to open the second set. She was in complete control as she allowed Peer only eight points in the second set and at one stage, winning 11 of 12 points.
After breaking Peer’s serve three times, Radwanska served for the match at 5-0. At 40-15, Peer sailed a backhand long, give Radwanska the victory in exactly one hour.
Radwanska advances to a Saturday night semifinal match against unseeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.
