Radwanska Squeezes Past Hantuchova in Three-set Thriller

8/5/2011

Carlsbad, Calif. – Third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland overcame a slow start and a right shoulder injury to defeat eighth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 10 minutes to advance to the semifinals of the Mercury Insurance Open for the second consecutive year.

With Radwanska feeling the effects of her injury early in the match, she could only win a total of four points on her serve as Hantuchova broke her three times in winning the first set in just 24 minutes.

During the break following the first set, Radwanska, a Mercury Insurance Open finalist in 2010, received treatment on her shoulder from the trainer.

When play resumed following her treatment, Radwanska returned to the court with a "nothing-to-lose" attitude as she began swinging freely and extending the rallies.

Radwanska built leads of 4-1 and 5-3 in the second set and despite having her serve broken in the ninth game, she clinched the second set when she broke Hantuchova’s serve.

With a spot in the semifinals on the line, each player held serve through the first six games of the third set.  In the seventh game, Hantuchova broke serve to take a 4-3 lead and looked like she was on her way to the victory.

However, Radwanska had other ideas as she won the last three games of the match, which included two service breaks, to close out the match.

“It was actually very nice feeling, coming back, especially from the first set. It's always hard to win those kinds of matches,” said Radwanska after the match. She advances to the semifinals, where she will face second-seeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany on Saturday. Radwanska has won both of their previous head-to-head meetings.
