Lisicki Defeats Vandeweghe to Secure Spot in Quarterfinals
8/4/2011
Carlsbad, Calif. - Local favorite Coco Vandeweghe of Rancho Santa Fe fell short in her attempt to reach the quarterfinals of the Mercury Insurance Open Presented by Tri-City Medical Center for the second year in a row as she lost to twelfth-seeded Sabine Lisicki of Germany, 6-4, 6-3 in a third round match.
Vandeweghe opened the match on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa with a strong service game, but Lisicki, taking advantage of the American’s errors, reeled off five consecutive game to take a 5-1 lead.
At one point, a frustrated Vandeweghe blasted a ball out of the stadium but managed to regain her composure and win three games in a row to make the score 5-4 in Lisicki’s favor. Serving for the first set, the German wasted two set points before wrapping up the set in 39 minutes.
The momentum continued in Lisicki’s favor in the second set as she broke Vandeweghe’s serve in the first game. Both players held serve until the ninth game when Vandeweghe served to stay in the match as Lisicki led 5-4.
Vandeweghe took a 30-15 lead, but Lisicki won the next two points to get to match point. Serving at 30-40 Vandeweghe hit a double fault to end the match, which took one hour and 14 minutes.
Lisicki looks to continue her run in Carlsbad as she faces top-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia in a Friday quarterfinal match on Stadium Court.
